RCLAS Workshop: Punching Up Your Comedy Writing
01:30pm -03:30pm
One of the main things Janice likes to teach in comedy is “there are no rules in comedy”, but there is structure. By adding good comedy structure to your stories, laughs can be generated.
In this workshop, you will work on how to make your characters funnier, your locations weirder, and your reveals more entertaining. There are different ways to get a laugh but you have to give yourself permission to think like a comedy writer.
Writers can bring their stories/scripts/screenplays that they are working on, and we will use the comedy structures to add the punch. There will also be sample works provided as exercises to help you work on your comedic style.
Janice Bannister is a stand-up comic, playwright, producer and director. She is the owner of Laughter Zone 101 and she teaches stand-up comedy and storytelling workshops.

Urban Solar Garden – Public Information Session
The City of New Westminster is hosting a FREE Public Information Session on Thursday, July 20th, from 7PM to 8PM at the Anvil Centre to discuss the potential development of an Urban Solar Garden.
Local residents and businesses are invited to attend and talk about:
VISION – Outline of the City vision to develop an Urban Solar Garden as an accessible, cheaper alternative to rooftop solar that allows access to solar energy “Made in New West, for New West”.
CONCEPT – Overview of the initial concept where community members served by the New Westminster Electric Utility can voluntarily subscribe to a portion of the electricity generated from the array.
Solar PV panels are installed at a City-owned location to produce renewable, local, and zero-carbon energy.
Local residents and businesses subscribe to buy their portion of solar energy generated by the PV array (for up to 25 years).
Each subscriber receives a credit on their monthly or bi-monthly electrical utility bill equivalent to their share of electricity produced by the Urban Solar Garden.
LOCATION – Identification of suitable sites for a 50 kW array (~ 200 panels) that would feed into the local electricity grid and become part of the capital assets owned by New Westminster’s Electric Utility.
Everyone with an interest in clean energy and solar power is encouraged to attend! Your active participation is important so we can understand the community’s interest in this project and gather valuable feedback.
RSVP for this free event above, at the City's website.

Celebration of Light Fireworks Cruise
06:00pm -10:00pm
Start your voyage from our dock at New Westminster Quay for a sunset journey down the North Arm of the Fraser River past South Vancouver, Richmond and Marpole.
Enjoy a delicious west coast dinner as part of your cruise. The catamaran Beta Star then takes you out into the Straight of Georgia as the sun sets on the Pacific, then around Point Grey and the University Endowment Lands and into English Bay. We then get into position to watch the Honda Celebration of Lights fireworks.
With the Coast Range Mountains and the downtown peninsula of Vancouver in the background you’ll have the best seats in the house to watch this internationally-acclaimed fireworks festival. Afterwards, we take you into False Creek, docking near Science World, where an International Stage Lines luxury coach awaits to whisk you back to New Westminster in comfort and ease.
