Jane's Walk is a movement of free, citizen-led walking tours inspired by Jane Jacobs. The walks get people to tell stories about their communities, explore their cities, and connect with neighbours. Join us for our first boomerang bags sew-a-thon!
Boomerang Bags is an initiative that started in Australia and has spread worldwide. Bags are made by local communities for local communities and are sewn with recycled and donated materials.
Share bags are then placed within local shops for all to borrow and bring back.
NWEP's goal is to facilitate the process of shifting New Westminster's citizens and business away from plastic dependency by providing both reusable and shareable bags within our local shops.
Many cities around the world have moved away from plastic bag usage - We believe through education and community involvement that one day New Westminster could join the list.
Please note ** No sewing skills are required. We have many jobs available and could use a lot of help! We even have some experienced sewers who can show you some simple sewing techniques!

Stop in for a presentation and talk by Port Coquitlam Councillor and Fraser River Discovery Centre Director, Mike Forrest on May 13th at the Fraser River Discovery Centre in New Westminster, 788 Quayside Drive.
The Fraser River is a living, working river that is immensely important to Canada’s economical survival. With $4 billion in Gross Domestic Product, and $2.5 billion in annual wages (41,500 jobs), the role this river plays in each of our lives is incredible. Stories from companies, workers, and community members like Mike Forrest will help us to understand the impact this river makes on our daily lives. Forrest Marine Ltd, of which Mike is co-owner, has been operating and working this river for 3 generations and continues to contribute to the success of the province and the country.
Faces of the Fraser is an opportunity for the community to hear directly from those who play a key role in the working river every day.
This session includes a 30-minute presentation by Mike Forrest, and a Q&A session with light refreshments. The event is free to the public, but pre-registration is appreciated and can be done through our website; fraserriverdiscovery.org

Bridge - Opening Reception

What makes a bridge? That safe passage across difficult territories; spanning obstacles without closing off the way underneath. The increasing complexity and sophistication of the physical bridge taught us the mechanics of tension, compression, suspension, balance and connection. Over time these physical laws and interactions have evolved into increasingly abstract ideas, further transformed, expressed and communicated through metaphor.
Structurally, a bridge allows us to connect. In the human brain nothing stands out so much as the importance of connectivity. Is this the reason the bridge has became the source of our most powerful metaphors? The idea of a bridge exemplifies the search for connectivity in both the physical and metaphysical worlds and through the realm of our fertile imagination.
This exhibition looks at the interplays between the physicality of a familiar structure, its haunting sonic characteristics and a rich network of metaphoric and symbolic connections. In the exhibition space the bridge is embodied first through evocative and sensory (re)enactments of structure, light, colour and repetitive, hypnotic sound. The place under and inside the bridge is revealed as a hidden, vaulted world. Two works guide us through levels, illuminating the way. We can appreciate the functionality while feeling the uncanny. The third work is an ambivalent, cinematic journey that promises a destination but paradoxically, denies the arrival. Together these works evoke the Bridge; a journey, a conversation, a reading and (however fragile) the possibility of connection.
Comedian Chris Griffin at Lafflines Comedy Club

Griffin has performed at the Just For Laugh's North West Comedy Festival.Griffin, having endured over a decade of Family Guy jokes, entered the world of standup comedy to reclaim his name. He won his hometown’s Great Canadian Laugh Off in his first year, earning him a trip to Toronto to perform in the finals. The early success inspired him to quit his stable job and put his two degrees towards doing what he knows best - drinking and telling jokes.
Griffin is well on his way to his life goal of being a full blown alcoholic. His unique humour merges intelligence with a blue collar upbringing to create a perspective that is equal parts biting and empathetic to the human condition.
He was featured on iChannel’s No Kidding, performed in the 2015 YYComedy festival, 2015 Funnyfest and appeared in the Sled Island Music and Arts Festival.
Griffin recorded his first full length comedy special at the EPCOR Centre’s Engineered Air Theatre. The Mixtape was released at the end of 2013 coinciding with his move to Vancouver where he now resides.

an enjoyable and accessible talk: Collecting Contemporary Art. Laing lays out the 10 RULES for collecting contemporary art,
and will speak to why collecting contemporary art is so worthwhile.
A noted art collector, Laing and his wife Kathleen have more than thirty years experience in collecting contemporary art,
travelling worldwide to work with leading gallerists, dealers, auction houses, corporate and private collections,
public museums and other art professionals. Their devoted support of the visual arts is longstanding. Laing is currently a
Board member and Chair of the Acquisitions Committee for the Audain Art Museum and a trustee of the Jack & Doris
Shadbolt Foundation.
Previous posts held by Laing include eight years as an external, expert advisor for contemporary,
international art to the National Gallery of Canada Acquisitions Committee, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Vancouver
Art Gallery and President of the Contemporary Art Society of Vancouver (CASV). Laing is currently CEO of BrownArtConsulting, Inc.

River Critters Baking Class

Join Katia from Pamola Bakery as she teaches you how to roll cookies, decorate cupcakes and make other amazing treats! This popular class is great for young kids to get their hands dirty and play with their food. All classes take place in the main food hall in front of Pamola Bakery.
The class is for children ages 5 and under. Class begins at 10am sharp, please arrive on time.
There is a nominal $8 fee per child. Advanced online registration is required. This will help Katia prepare the appropriate amount of ingredients and reduce waste. We request that you register a maximum of three children per one adult.
Registration opens Wednesday morning at 10am for the following week. We are using Picatic as the online event registration platform. There is no need to sign up for an account. You may pay with any major credit card. If you have any trouble or feedback, please email us at events@rivermarket.ca

After passing through the bustling activity on the Fraser River, passengers will emerge into the quiet tranquility and panoramic beauty of a majestic fjord. This beautiful, fresh water tidal lake is one of the largest of its kind. Grassy, reverse deltas appear daily in the center of the lake as the tide recedes. We’ll travel along the cliff side and observe the ancient First Nations pictographs. This area is still a wilderness and home to bears, deer and cougars.
