Since 2010, the community of New West has gotten to know and love our very own New West Pride Society. Known for their epic events and colourful celebrations, the Pride Society is home to a board of directors who care about the LGBTQ2+ community and work hard to support and celebrate them. Though COVID-19 has changed the way we celebrate, Pride is not cancelled!
On August 15th from 7-9pm, New West Pride is facilitating a virtual event hosted by drag queen Kendall Gender, boasting drag performers, artists and presenters on a live-streamed event via FaceBook and YouTube. Find details on how to tune in here.
If you’re not the online party type, New West Pride is offering a $250 donation to a local charity for the best Pride window display. This year, they’re selecting winners from two categories: a local business sector and a residential sector. That way, whether you’re a business owner or a family looking for something to do, you can enjoy decorating for Pride and support your community in the process. To enter, submit your name/business name, address, phone number, contact person and maximum 3 images to firstname.lastname@example.org. More information can be found here.
Also, if you buy beer or merch from Steel & Oak Brewing Co. on Tuesday, August 10, all proceeds will go back to New West Pride Society. Try the Gin Barrel Aged Savasana or Cherry Nectarine Vibrant Things all week and celebrate #SOPROUD day at their unique tasting room!
Another way to celebrate is to participate in Fridays #QuestNewWest on August 14th. We’re weaving in Pride-related challenges and photo opportunities so you can celebrate your Pride while you’re out in Downtown New West. Check out the challenges here on August 14th at noon. You could win $50 gift cards to local restaurants and a $1000 cash prize! Details on our social media: @downtownnewwest
Whatever you choose, remember that Pride is about being unapologetically yourself and celebrating the LGBTQ2+ community, heritage and our collective hope for the future. Join the fun and have a (safe) celebration of Pride 2020!
