Unique Eats at the River Market

Wednesday, September 4, 2019

With a cool breeze from the Fraser River and a beautiful boardwalk, The River Market in Downtown New West is one of the best waterfront markets in Metro Vancouver, and the perfect spot to relax after a long day at work or school. On top of all that, the River Market just happens to be packed with hip, affordable restaurants serving innovative food and drinks.

Amaranthus’s plant-forward dishes are often simple in appearance, but complex in flavour. The chefs here are on a mission to highlight excellent ingredients, and they are succeeding by every measure. The ‘Coffee Roasted Beets’ are a perfect example of this: Zaklan Heritage Farm beets, beet top chimichurri, goat cheese, and pickled beet stem. Pure, wholesome goodness.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth and are feeling adventurous, check out Origins Chocolate. They’ve got every type of chocolate you could imagine. Their most popular—white chocolate with lemon oil and lemon sea salt—most likely has won more awards than both you and me combined!

Angelina’s is one of our favourite spots for brunch. In addition to their classic breakfast platters, they have an extensive menu of sweet and savoury ‘Pannekoeken’, dutch pancakes, featuring brilliant flavour combinations. This is the definition of comfort food.

Great Wall Tea is exactly what is sounds like. In the River Market, you’ll find this cozy nook with a wall full of inventive teas. The baristas will brew it for you there, or pack it up for you to take home. Try the ‘Purple Chocolate’, which is “full of antioxidants from the amazing purple tea leaf, and has delicious cocoa shells and dreamy rose petals!”.

Longtail Kitchen’s Chef Justin Cheung is combining flavours from Southeast Asian cuisine in a North American setting. Longtail often create unique dishes for special occasions, such as this Asian-style eggs benedict, which was available on Mother’s Day.

You can find the best southern cuisine north of the Fraser, right here in the River Market at Re-up BBQ. Date night? Grab ‘The Full Barnyard’ which has all the classic American favourites—ribs, beef brisket, fried chicken, biscuits or fries, slaw, and pit beans—and is enough food for 2 people with leftovers to take home.
