Worldwide Walk to Fight Poverty
01:00pm -06:00pm
WHAT:
On May 5 and 6, hundreds of thousands around the globe will march together in the second "Worldwide Walk to Fight Poverty"; a charitable walk hosted by the international religious organization Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC or Church Of Christ).
An expected 358 sites around the globe in 44 countries, 33 territories and across 18 time zones will simultaneously host the multi Guinness World Record event. The first Worldwide Walk was recognized as the largest charity walk across multiple venues held in 24 hours. The 2014 event had 519,221 participants from 129 sites across the world, situated in 16 countries. This year’s Worldwide Walk to Fight Poverty is aimed to beat its own records.
Proceeds of the Second Worldwide Walk will be used to continue providing food and medical assistance for those in immediate need in impoverished communities. The 2014 charity walk benefited victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda, known as Haiyan, the strongest tropical storm recorded in history. The global walk also helped finance the INC’s first resettlement and eco-farming community in Leyte, Philippines.
WHY:
The joint effort of INC members across the globe is one of many international campaigns of the INC’s socio-civic programs aimed to strengthen the bond between the congregations of the Church Of Christ and the communities in which they serve.
The INC also continues to support five self-sustaining resettlement communities in the Philippines; along with 17 eco-farming sites, like the one recently established in Ladybrand, South Africa.
WHEN:
For the BC Region, we will be walking from the "W" sign at Westminster Pier Park, along the boardwalk, and finishing at Reliance Court at the Quayside Esplanade.
Walk Start Time: 3 PM
Length: 1.6 KM or 1 mile
Participants: Members of the INC in our region as well as the general public who would like to participate.

Drone Day
Dear Listener,
New Westminster has been called to action—
For too long the drone has been overshadowed by the tyrants of melody & rhythm. We call upon all drones to come together annually to form a massive drone.
Relax, realize, meditate, disengage and join us in front of old crow coffee, at the foot of the staircase, to basque in slow dulcet tone.
Last minute/drop-in artists welcome, ask for Wes (or DM @slowwild.party on insta) to be added to the bill.
How late will we drone?
Please see event website for more details.
RCLAS Writing Workshop:Creating Believable Characters & Settings
01:30pm -03:30pm
Whether you are writing a short story or novel, when you create characters it is important to make each one distinct and different in order to keep your story interesting. In a novel that has a lot of characters, readers can have a hard time keeping track unless there are clear distinctions. When you introduce a new character, you must provide a clear impression of that character's uniqueness. Characters, even in fantasy stories, need to seem ‘real.’ Try to create characters so memorable that they stay in the readers' minds for the rest of their lives. What is their back-story? What made them like they are? How do they speak? What do they think about? What are their aspirations? All of these things are important ingredients in building characters.
Please see event website above for more details.

Read MoreWhat is the Flood Management Strategy for the Fraser River?
06:00pm -09:00pm
Potential flooding is already in the news across BC, but projections to the year 2100 are for larger and more frequent floods in the region that could cause widespread disruption and trigger direct and indirect losses estimated at $20-30+ billion — four to five times the losses from the Alberta floods of 2013.
These daunting findings come from a phase 1 (2016) report of the Lower Mainland Flood Management Strategy initiative, which has the participation of over 50 governmental and non-government entities and program support from the non-profit Fraser Basin Council.
Given the critical nature of this issue, the Fraser River Discovery Centre has invited Steve Litke, Senior Program Manager for the Fraser Basin Council at our next Fraser River Dialogue on the evening of Thursday, May 31st at the Fraser River Discovery Centre in New Westminster to talk about next steps in development of the regional Flood Management Strategy – and what is needed to better manage flood risk and increase community resilience.
Tickets to this event include:
-Wine and cheese reception (no-host bar)
-Self-guided tour of the new working river exhibit, Journey Through the Working River
-A seat at the fire-side chat
Tickets to this important event can be purchased at http://fraserriverdiscovery.org/FRD.
