BIO: Distinguished author and Professor Emeritus, Gary Geddes, writes that Trysh Ashby-Rolls “has not only had the courage to write about challenging social issues other writers seldom attempt – but has also developed a voice and style that are literary in the best sense of that word.” Among the subjects she has attempted in books, short stories, television documentaries, newspaper and magazine articles are: female and male genital mutilation, partners of child sexual abuse survivors, suicide, international parent-child abduction, physician-patient abuse and major trauma – natural and manmade disaster, major accident and illness – and recovery in different cultures globally. In Toronto she covered a sex trade workers’ conference, and a pornographic film festival. She cut her career teeth in 1981 as the first professional writer and news presenter in Canada’s cable television industry, paid at industry rates. From there she hosted, wrote and produced a current affairs program for CHCH-TV, Hamilton, after which she worked on CBC radio’s Metro Morning as a story editor. In 1989 she moved to the west coast with a book contract from McGraw-Hill Ryerson. She has spoken at conferences and read from her work worldwide. Trysh gained a M.A. Distinction in 1998, from the University of London, England, specializing in psychological trauma and recovery. She is a member of The Writers’ Union of Canada and the Canadian Association of Journalists. McGraw-Hill Ryerson published her first book, Triumph: A Journey of Healing from Incest (1991), a Canadian bestseller and Top Seller on Amazon.com (2006), with a second edition coming soon. Travel Blows the Mind: Cautionary Tales, in This Place a Stranger: Canadian Women Travelling Alone, ed. Vici Johnstone (Caitlin, 2015) received excellent reviews. Unbecoming a Physician in Walk Myself Home: an anthology to end violence against women, ed. Andrea Routley (Caitlin, 2010), which Trysh is developing into a full-length book. She has recently completed Left Behind Dad: A Loving Father’s Search for his Abducted Daughters. See more at the event's website above. Anvil Centre false MM/DD/YYYY aMyetLVwQzjnGkYtOmxH22158
