A Half-Decade of Change: The Refill Stop's Commitment to Reducing Waste
As The Refill Stop marks its 5th anniversary, the founder Jessica Brown reflects on the journey that began with a simple yet powerful vision: to create a local oasis where the community can refill their personal containers with eco-friendly soaps and cleaners. Inspired by experiences she had on Vancouver Island, Jessica realized that every neighborhood deserves a place to reduce waste and embrace sustainable living.
The Evolution of a Vision
“When The Refill Stop first opened its doors, the goal was straightforward—provide a convenient refill station for everyday products.” says Jessica.
However, the landscape shifted dramatically with the onset of COVID-19 just months later. The pandemic forced the business to adapt it processes, but it also opened doors to new customer needs. Many shoppers approached them with requests for items they hadn’t considered, and they rose to the challenge, expanding their offerings in response.
Community Favorites
One of the most popular products has been dish soap, a staple in every household. Customers love that they offer beautifully scented options, sourced from local suppliers in British Columbia and Canada. “We've seen many of the same containers being refilled over the years from some of our regulars. Keeps the plastic out of landfill and even recycling depots.” By encouraging customers to bring their own containers, The Refill Stop is not only keeping plastic out of landfills but also promoting a circular economy—many regulars have been refilling the same containers for years.
Curating Eco-Friendly Products
Selecting the right soaps and cleaners involves a careful process. They prioritize local products, often testing options based on customer suggestions. BC is home to some amazing suppliers dedicated to sustainability, and The Refill Stop is proud to partner with businesses that lead the way in creating high-quality, natural, refillable products.
“There are really outstanding businesses that are really leaders in making quality natural products and then making them refillable too,” says Jessica “They are really ahead of the game. “
Celebrating Milestones
One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been building relationships with customers. It’s heartwarming to see familiar faces returning, choosing to support a small business over larger competitors. Each visit reinforces their belief in the importance of community and sustainable choices.
Engaging with the Community
At The Refill Stop, community engagement is at the heart of what they do. They foster discussions on reducing carbon footprints and Jessica learns from customers just as much as customers learn from them “It's really a hub of learning with the environment in mind and in turn we also learn how to be better as a business. “
Looking Ahead
As they celebrate this milestone, the Refill Stop is excited about the future! Plans are in place to expand their inventory and resume hosting small events and workshops with local environmentalists. These initiatives will allow them to deepen community ties and spread awareness about sustainable practices.
Supporting Their Mission
They encourage customers to support their mission beyond refilling containers. Simply sharing experiences and spreading the word about The Refill Stop can make a significant impact. Together, they’ve kept tens of thousands of bottles out of landfills and recycling centers, contributing to a larger movement toward sustainability.
for Aspiring Eco-Minded Entrepreneurs
To anyone considering starting their own eco-minded business, their advice is simple: ask questions and seek guidance. Collaborating with others in the community is vital, as small businesses united can achieve greater success than those operating in isolation.
Come celebrate with them as they embark on another year, The Refill Stop is having a 5 year anniversery sale to thank customers for their continued support.
