Turning Pages and Building Connections: Anne’s Story at Kinder Books

This week, we had the pleasure of chatting with Anne Uebbing, owner of Kinder Books—a cozy and thoughtfully curated book and gift shop located in the River Market. Anne’s story is one of passion, resilience, and the transformative power of books. And we are honoured to feature her in our Blog during this International Women’s Month.

From Eastern Germany to Downtown New West: Anne’s Journey with Kinder Books

Anne’s love for books started early, growing up in Eastern Germany where free travel was limited—but books opened the door to endless adventures. One of the three local bookstores was just across the street from Anne’s school, and the library was within walking distance. That’s where she spent her afternoons, traveling to different worlds through stories.

After moving to North America in 1999, Anne noticed that local bookstores lacked the heart and community feel she had known growing up. Big-box stores just didn’t have the same warmth, and she felt it was essential to recreate that sense of connection.

Anne began by selling books through Barefoot Books in 2011, setting up shop at craft fairs, farmers’ markets, and teacher conferences. Over time, her collection grew—and so did her vision. Then came the pandemic, which pushed Anne to take the leap and open a brick-and-mortar store. In 2020, Kinder Books officially found its home at the River Market in Downtown New West.

Challenges and Triumphs as a Woman Business Owner

Running a small business isn’t without its challenges, but Anne is grateful that being a woman hasn’t been a barrier. Instead, the biggest challenge has been changing how people view small businesses.

In a world dominated by mass production and sterile shopping experiences, many have forgotten the value of independent stores. Running a small business means wearing a lot of hats—product selection, marketing, display design, and even cleaning the floors.

What is Anne solution?

Building a talented team that shares her vision and passion. Recognizing the need to delegate was key. According to Anne, it requires careful planning and discipline, but seeing their collective efforts come to life makes it all worthwhile.

Why Downtown New West?

For Anne, Downtown New Westminster has always felt like home. The community’s unwavering support for local businesses is what she loves most about being part of New West.

Her first bookstore booth appeared at an artisan market in 2011—what we now know as the New West Craft Market. The market’s owner at the time was a passionate reader and encouraged Anne to share her books. That opportunity allowed her to build lasting relationships with the local community.

People here truly understand the value of supporting small businesses. It’s a vibrant and collaborative community, and I feel so grateful to be part of it. I’ve watched babies grow into nearly teenagers right here in New West!

What Makes Kinder Books Special

As the name suggests, Kinder Books specializes in children's books for ages 0–14, but it doesn’t stop there. The shop also offers a carefully curated selection of adult titles and a free book-ordering service for any title available in the North American market.

But Kinder Books is more than just a bookstore—it’s a creative hub. The shop features a rotating art exhibit showcasing local artists and regularly hosts family-friendly events like storytimes, art workshops, and the annual “Where’s Waldo? Scavenger Hunt”, in July. Anne’s passion for building a sense of community through books is evident in every corner of the shop.

It’s not just about selling books. It’s about creating a space where people connect, discover, and feel inspired.

A Story of Kindness That Traveled the World

Anne’s favorite customer story is a touching reminder of how far a single book can reach. A customer once bought a small book called Ishi—a charming story about resilience and perspective—for her niece in Japan, whose community had been affected by an earthquake.

The young girl shared the book’s message with others in her town, and soon, Ishi became a symbol of hope. The author was so moved by the story that she sent boxes of the book to the community, ensuring every child had a copy. And to think—it all started with a single book sitting on Anne’s table.

International Women’s Month & Anne’s Advice for Women Entrepreneurs

For Anne, International Women’s Month is a time to reflect on the incredible women who have shaped her journey. Many of her closest and most trusted business relationships are with women. According to Anne, their support has been invaluable, and she is proud to celebrate the strength, creativity, and resilience of women in all their roles.

For other women looking to start a business, Anne’s advice is simple yet powerful:

Know your values, create a clear vision, and stay committed to your path. You do you. Be inspired by others, but don’t feel the need to copy anyone. Stay true to what makes your business unique, and success will follow.
