Yoga at the Quay: Uniting Wellness and Community in New Westminster
Nestled in the heart of New Westminster, Yoga at the Quay is more than a yoga studio—it’s a sanctuary of inclusivity and accessibility. Founded by Laura O’Reilly, the studio is rooted in a deep commitment to creating a welcoming space for everyone, regardless of background, experience, or physical ability.
A Vision of Accessibility and Community
Laura was inspired to establish Yoga at the Quay out of a desire to stay true to the multifaceted roots of yoga, countering the often narrow portrayal of yoga as a practice for only the most flexible or athletic. At Yoga at the Quay, yoga is for everyone, embodying a four-fold path that encompasses ethical, devotional, physical, and helpful practices.
“Our vision aligns perfectly with the spirit of New Westminster: unpretentious and inclusive,” Laura shares. The studio places accessibility first, with beginner-friendly classes tailored to diverse needs and capped at just 12 participants for a personalized experience.
What Makes Yoga at the Quay Unique
Yoga at the Quay goes beyond the physical aspects of yoga, offering a holistic experience that includes meditation, breathwork, spiritual readings, and even a serenaded savasana. The studio prioritizes community values, ensuring that ethical service and a sense of connection guide every decision.
In a world where yoga classes can sometimes feel intimidating, Yoga at the Quay creates a space where everyone—from absolute beginners to seasoned practitioners—can feel supported. Each option is thoughtfully explained, with no jargon or pressure, allowing participants to discover what works best for their unique bodies and needs.
Connecting with the Community
Laura and her team are deeply engaged with the local community, hosting events like Yoga at the Farmer’s Market, Family Yoga at NW Family Place, and Chair Yoga at Purpose Society. They’ve also initiated new community evens like the first annual Halloween Hunt and their innovative Zero-Waste Christmas Giveaway.
“We believe in collaboration and connection,” Laura explains. “If there’s an opportunity to support our neighbors, we’re there.”
