In this blog post, we’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on a true gem in Downtown New West: Origins Chocolate Bar. Owned by Peter and Katey, this charming chocolate shop isn’t just about delicious treats—it’s about community, sustainability, and heartwarming stories. Let’s dive into the sweet journey of Origins Chocolate Bar and what makes it a beloved part of our Downtown New West landscape!
A Passion for Chocolate
The story of Origins Chocolate Bar began in the world of live performance. Peter and Katey, artists in the freelance industry, sought a way to stabilize their income and share something they loved. Their introduction to the craft chocolate scene by David Mincey of The Chocolate Project, in Victoria, BC, ignited a passion that transformed into a unique business.
In 2018, after years of tasting and appreciating craft chocolate, they jumped at the chance to open a kiosk at River Market. It was the perfect opportunity to turn their chocolate dreams into reality and, in 2023, they opened their own store in our beloved neighbourhood.
Overcoming Challenges
Like many local businesses, they faced significant challenges, particularly during the pandemic. They revamped their website and launched an online sales platform, offering free delivery throughout Metro Vancouver. This proactive approach not only helped them survive but thrive, as they delivered joy—one chocolate bar at a time.
Despite the economic and global challenges our society has faced, they soldiered on and created a welcoming space that celebrates the art of chocolate making.
A Love for Downtown New West
Choosing to set up shop in Downtown New Westminster was a natural fit for the proud business owners, who live in the area. Having produced shows at the Anvil Centre, they saw the potential for growth and vibrancy in the community. Peter believes that with the right mix of businesses, Downtown New West can become a bustling hub for visitors and residents alike.
Unique Offerings That Make a Difference
What sets Origins Chocolate Bar apart is its commitment to quality and ethics. They source all their products from bean-to-bar, small-batch, craft chocolate makers who prioritize ethical practices. This means paying farmers fair wages and creating delicious chocolate without the industrial processes found in mass production. Every bar you taste from their shop represents a commitment to both the planet and its people.
They also have a great collection of puzzles that you can take straight off the shelf and assemble on the large wooden table in the center of the shop while enjoying a hot drink or a chocolate bar. Isn’t this the perfect activity for rainy days?
Heartwarming Customer Experiences
The joy of chocolate at Origins Chocolate Bar goes beyond taste—it’s about connection. Peter recalls a poignant experience with a customer who, due to illness, had lost the ability to taste chocolate. After learning about her preferences, Peter offered her a bar that reignited her passion for chocolate. Her joy was a reminder of why they do what they do.
Another memorable moment involved a regular customer who found solace in Origins’ cozy atmosphere after losing her husband. The simple act of enjoying a mug of their delicious drinking chocolate became a cherished weekly ritual, offering her comfort during a difficult time.
A Taste Inside This Sweet Atmosphere
There are so many amazing products to try at Origins Chocolate Bar. But if you only need to try one this Fall, Peter recommends the Speculaas, a spicy, flavor-packed chocolate made with cinnamon, ginger, and all the delicious spices. Yum!
Speculaas returns to the menu this season, so be sure to stop by the store to try it out. We doubt you can drink just one cup!
